Millers Object
To Durum Wheat

Say It Is Too Hard For Ordinary
Milling.

which

Durum wheat, has been

largely recommended for growing in
certain parts of Western Canada on
account of its drought resisting qual-
ity, consists of a group of varieties,
nearly all of which have short, com-
pact heads, large, very hard kernels
and comparatively weak straw. As
a rule Durum wheat is bearded.
While some of the varieties are ex-
cellent for bread making, the major-
ity are decidedly inferior,

“The objections the best
ietics of Durum’ wheat, says Chas. E.
Saunders, Dominion Ceralist, “arise
not only from the yellow color of the
flour (a shade which is not fashion-
able at present), but to the extreme
hardness of the kernel’, Durum
wheat in poor condition be
ground into flour by exactly the same
system as ordinary wheat, the prob-
lem is very troublesome, Naturally,
the millers are averse to changing
their methods and will not do so un-
til forced by a shortage of ordinary
wheat and the presence in the mar-

Annual Sweet Clover

Will Bring Nitrogen and Organic
Matter to Soil.

The new annual sweet clover dis-
covered by Professor Hughes, of the
lowa Experiment Station, is gaining
favor according to published reports.

It will be remembered that most
sweet clover is biennial. This an-
nual white sweet clover is a new

plant for agriculture. It can be sown
with grain in the spring or as late as
the middle of June and develop much
growth which will bring to the soil
both nitrogen and organic matter.
Its general use is limited yet because
of the high cost and scarcity of seed
which is now selling at $5 per pound.

This sweet clover, under
trial in New Jersay, was planted June

29
“ec

annual

12, and reached a height of
on August 1, and for seven days fol-
lowing grew 8 1-2 inches, more than
one inch per day.

The biennial sweet clover is far

better for fergilizing purposes than |
should |

and
have a larger place in agriculture, but
annual

most farmers appreciate

sweet clover promises a still
better green manuring plant and we
look forward to the time when there
of seed, that its use
will become general. It has been es-

timated that a good crop of annual

is an abundance

swect clover will yield as much nitro-
gen to the soil as cight tons of man-
ure and also furnish a large quantity
of organic matter,

Wise is the architect who plans to

have a mansion in the skies.
